TRCB, in collaboration with Hames Sharley, and with early input from HOK (London), was commissioned by AMP Capital to not only double the retail floorspace of Karrinyup Shopping Centre but to reimagine its big-box typology entirely. Guided by principles of authenticity, connectivity and diversity, the redevelopment creates a new hub for the community that includes cinemas, restaurants, playgrounds and a main street.

Careful and rigorous masterplanning, facilitated by close collaboration between the consultant team, was undertaken since inception to ensure minimal disruption to the existing trade of the already busy centre.

Organic architectural forms and large landscaped areas draw from the local context. A palette of coastal colours and textural materials complements major glazed entries and sinuous rolling skylights, emphasising the relationship to the local landscape, and suggesting the open sea and abundant natural light of iconic Western Australian beaches.

Completed in 2021, the new Karrinyup Shopping Centre is a vibrant destination where relaxed coastal cool meets stylish international brands, and crucially, a place that serves the community that remains at its heart.

‘TRCB understand the world of retail and the commercial viability of proposals extremely well. We appreciated their commercial and practical approach; particularly at masterplanning level, which helped unlock untapped potential in our project. A redevelopment of this scale and complexity is a long process. The commitment and passion of the TRCB team never wavered, their dedication to the project went above and beyond. The team consistently delivered a high level of design and detailing quality, which will be enjoyed by millions of visitors to the centre for years to come. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending TRCB to lead large-scale commercial projects.’

– Brenton Loth, Project Director, AMP Capital (September 2022)
