Scotch College is a multi-campus independent early learning, primary and secondary day and boarding school for boys in Perth, Western Australia. As College Architects, TRCB has been guiding the future development of the school since 1998 – a role that has involved the design of more than $68 Million of new and refurbished buildings and facilities to date.

For the Middle School, the college was seeking a learning environment to serve students transitioning from Junior School to Senior School. Our response was the design of an interconnected collection of learning spaces including a two-storey General Learning Block, a library and art gallery, a food technology studio, multipurpose rooms, visual art studios and a cafeteria arranged around a landscaped quadrangle.

Located between the Junior School and The Senior School, the Middle School’s configuration focuses on connection – a ‘Learning Street’ creates an internal communal space that also accommodates students moving between lessons, the quadrangle enables outdoor learning opportunities while providing a centre for students to socialise, and the materials used throughout link the new buildings to the rest of the campus as well as to the smaller scale heritage architecture across the road.
