Aranmore Catholic College

Date: 2017

The St Mary’s Building at Aranmore Catholic College is a heritage listed classroom building that was identified as being in need of modernisation as part of a campus masterplan completed by Taylor Robinson Chaney Broderick.

Our design involved demolishing walls between existing classrooms to form adaptable learning spaces to suit contemporary education needs. These spaces can be reconfigured to suit groups of differing sizes from 10 to over 100 and feature a range of furniture settings to accommodate different learning styles.

The building had a complete overhaul with new services and ICT infrastructure throughout carefully integrated to retain all of the heritage features of the building.

The St Mary’s Building was constructed in the austere years immediately after World War Two and as a result the interiors are spartan and don’t have any of the traditional moulded plaster cornices or profiled timber skirtings that may be expected. We decided to add this layer of detail that was missing from the building and provided timber wall panelling and perforated window shutters to the classrooms to provide protection to walls and control of glare whilst adding an element of intricate detail to these spaces.
