State Library of Western Australia

Our team completed a pilot office refurbishment project on level three for the State Library, including the addition of modern work stations and upcycled original library furniture. The fit-out focused on converting ‘back of house’ staff spaces to ‘open house’ work areas with lines of sight from the public library area into behind-the scenes administrative spaces.

Although not yet listed as a heritage building, the State Library is a substantial and exemplary late modernist institutional building with classic modernist antecedents including Berlin’s famous public library, the ‘Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin’ by Hans Scharoun. The design responds sensitively to the distinctive modernist aesthetic of the building to create a seamless and complementary new work environment.
